Sheriff's Office

It is my honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Walker County, Georgia, as your Sheriff since January 1, 1997. I am currently serving in my seventh term as Sheriff; I am Walker County's longest tenured Sheriff.

Walker County, Georgia, was created by an act of the Georgia Legislature and was organized on December 18, 1833.  It was named after U.S. Senator Freeman Walker.

During my research of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office history, I am satisfied that Walker County has had a Sheriff since 1833. I am the 3rd Sheriff, either elected or appointed, in the county’s history.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is a fast paced, busy law enforcement agency, responding to more than forty thousand calls for service each year.

The Sheriff’s Office is organized into seven divisions - Detention, Road Patrol, Detective, Court Services, Drug Task Force and Training.

Our Sheriff’s Office employees serve on various boards to include Children's Advocacy Center, Sexual Assault Center, Family Crisis Center Cottage and Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force.

As a public servant, I have always felt a need to participate in charitable organizations. Since 1997, the Sheriff’s Office has worked with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and Pink Campaign to raise money for their cause.

Since 2015, the Sheriff’s Office has worked with Blood Assurance Battle of the Badges in a fun spirited competition campaign with Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office to encourage blood donations to this life saving nonprofit organization.

Since Christmas of 1989, the number one charity for Sheriff’s Office has been the Stocking Full of Love. It was re-named as the Al Millard Memorial Stocking Full of Love in 1996 after the passing of the funds' founder, Sheriff Al Millard (1989-1996).

Each year, employees and volunteers work at many fundraisers to help raise money for the fund. The fund's largest fundraiser is the annual Car Show and Sock Hop on Labor Day weekend.

By the Christmas season, Santa and his elves are ready to provide toys and gifts to needy Walker County children. The toy store is opened and families with children ages 0 - 14 are served.

Since that first Christmas store in 1989 when 37 children were served until Christmas of 2011 when more than 2,000 children were provided toys and gifts, we - the employees, volunteers, donors, and recipients - have been blessed.

As we continue to provide your public safety needs, our focus is to enhance your quality of life through our service to you, the Walker County citizen.

"In God We Trust" Sheriff Steve Wilson
